Frequently Asked Questions

Find below some of the most frequently asked questions we hear about Eyelid Surgery Procedures, from our customers in Perth.

What does Blepharoplasty address?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can address both the upper and lower lid areas of the eye. As well as reducing puffiness, there are many other improvements and benefits to undergoing eye bag surgery. Blepharoplasty can help you if you are experiencing any of the following issues around your eyes:

Upper Eyelids

  • Puffiness
  • Excess skin hiding the natural eyelid fold
  • Loose eyelid skin, sometimes obstructing vision

Lower Eyelids

  • Excess skin
  • Fine wrinkles in the lower eyelid area
  • Bags, puffiness and dark circles
Who is a suitable candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a safe procedure and produces amazing results. However, anti-inflammatory, aspirin and blood-thinning medications must be avoided prior to the surgery.

On your initial consultation, we will perform a detailed examination and all options and costs will be discussed with you.

How much does it cost?

The cost of blepharoplasty varies from patient to patient and is dependent on many factors such as the patient’s amount of excess skin. The cost of our blepharoplasty procedure starts at $3,500. All follow-up consultations are free of charge.

On the day of Surgery

All surgeries are conducted as a day procedure. Upon arrival, you will be checked in by our nursing and admin staff. The Surgeon will conduct a final review and the site is marked for the procedure. To minimise post-operative discomfort, the surgical site is numbed with local anaesthesia.

All surgeries are conducted in sterile conditions to minimise the risk of infection. Smoking, alcohol and illicit drug use must be avoided after the procedure.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, it is advised that you should rest for 48 hours. For the first five days, you will have dressings over the surgical site. The sutures will be removed on day five. Swelling can last up to 10 days postoperative. Following surgery, it is best to avoid smoking for 6 weeks.

The scars from the upper eyelid should fade over 6- 12 weeks. During eyelid surgery, the scars are placed in the crease of the eyelid to ensure that it is not easily visible.

How long does it take to recover from eyelid surgery?

Once your eye lid surgery is completed, you will usually head home on the same day or the day after. You may experience some bruising or swelling roughly 1-3 weeks after your surgery. Heading back to work and regular activity usually takes between 10-14 days and the appearance of your eyes may improve over the next couple of months.

What causes excess eyelid skin?

The main reason for excess eyelid skin is the aging process. As we age, our skin becomes less supple and unable to bounce back into place as it once did. Gravity pulls the skin around our eyes down as the muscles weaken. Additionally, some people are genetically predetermined to have more loose skin underneath their eyes than others.

When we aim to lessen the appearance of loose skin or bags underneath the eyes, it is often preferable to reposition the fat. This is because, in many cases, the patient does not have excess fat around their eyes but a malposition of fat.

Is eyelid surgery painful?

Eyelid surgery is actually among the least painful cosmetic procedures. You may experience some discomfort on the day and some temporary blurred vision. Your eyes may also be tender during your recovery; however, eyelid surgery has a relatively short recovery period.

Does insurance cover eyelid surgery?

Typically, eyelid surgery is not covered by insurance or Medicare; however, if your eyelids are causing you severe discomfort or hindering your vision, you may be eligible for a rebate. Before considering any cosmetic surgery, discuss any costs with your treating doctor and, if appropriate, your private health insurance provider.

Are you awake during eyelid surgery?

During your eyelid surgery, you will be given either local or general anaesthetic. Local anaesthesia will numb the area around your eyes, ensuring that you feel no pain during your procedure and you will be awake for the duration.

General anaesthetic will ensure that you are in a controlled unconscious state during your surgery. During your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss which option will be most suitable for you.

How long does an eye lift last?

Your eyelift procedure will last roughly 1-3 hours. Once completed and recovered, you can expect your upper eyelid surgery to last around 5-7 years. Any surgery on your lower eyelids typically does not need to be repeated in the future.
